Peten Itza Lakeside Facility, Guatemala
Located in the small village of El Remate, you will find out
Peten Itza Lakeside Facility a pleasant alternative to the congested Flores/Santa Elena
area.
The
village of El Remate is just beginning to grow into an attractive tourist area
making it an ideal place to base your vacation time in the area. A police
substation has recently been added to the village for additional security.
Beginning in late fall of 2003 the area increased in its telephone
service with internet access.
Horses and guides are available that will pick you up at the
front door and a number of dramatic trail rides are easily accessible through
some of the nearby forests and mountainous areas. El
Remate is famous for its
open air carving shops that you can wander through, watching the master carvers
create beautiful pieces that are for sale or made to order. Swimming in the cool
clear waters of the lake is a favorite pastime for many or just lounging in the
numerous hammocks furnished by the hotel. Hiking trails through the area are
rich with birds, flowers, tropical plants, and trees. Boats and guides for
fishing, sightseeing, birding, and searching for crocodiles are available.
Herbal and medicinal plants abound around the hotel and throughout the area. A
tour providing information about local plants and herbs is available.
The nearby Biotopo Cerro Cahui Park is spectacular for bird
watching and is an easy walk from the hotel or you can use one of the courtesy
bicycles furnished by the hotel. There are two high lookout points or
"Miradores" where you can get and excellent views of Lake Peten Itza
and the nearby lakes of Macanche and Sal Itza. The park is controlled by CECON,
a branch of the Guatemala's University of San Carlos and was established for
scientific studies.
