Livingston, Guatemala
Livingston is a village with the magic of the Garifuna culture. Excitement
abounds during the frequent, exotic, Afro-Caribbean festivals and celebrations.
Livingston is a tropical, hilly and different place than any other that we’ve
seen in Guatemala so far. Even its name is strange in light of the names of
other cities in Guatemala like Quetzaltenango, Huehuetenango, Totonicapán and
the like. Here, the fresh water of the Rio Dulce rolls into the saltwater of the
Bahia de Amatique and in this transition zone you will find additional life
forms thriving in abundance, and is a great place for photographs. The marine
life supports an amazing concentration of birds. At times there are hundreds in
the air at once including pelicans and magnificent frigatebirds. The Livingston
area supports a large fishing industry. The shrimp boats are out dragging their
nets almost every night. You will enjoy a brief lunch and expedition
opportunities here, while your luggage is moved from your riverboat to your
sea-faring boat, and readied for your two-hour excursion glancing the edge of
the Caribbean, on to Punta Gorda, in Belize.
